The world record holder, London 2012 champion, and now Tokyo 2020 champion – Eliud Kipchoge is one of the greatest marathon athletes in the history of the sport.
He made his move at around the 30km mark, and the rest of the field just couldn’t keep up as he built a comfortable one minute 17 second lead to pull away for good.
The 36-year-old finishes with a time of 2:08:38, wins his fourth Olympic medal and becomes just the third athlete to win multiple Olympic gold medals in the men’s marathon.
And a sprint finish for silver and bronze! Abdi Nageeye (NED) implores his Belgian training partner Bashir Abdi to push with him and get ahead of Lawrence Cherono (KEN) with about 200m to go, and they do to claim silver and bronze! What an effort from all three men, what a finish!
