The Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon (KLSCM) 2023 is gearing up for an intense showdown among Malaysia’s top long-distance runners, all vying for the coveted Full Marathon Malaysian category title.
With over 40,000 participants expected to converge at Dataran Merdeka on the weekend of September 30th and October 1st, this iconic event has achieved recognition as the sole race in Malaysia endorsed by the governing body World Athletics with a Road Race Label.
In the 15th edition of KLSCM, a fierce competition is anticipated in the Men’s Full Marathon Malaysian category.
Defending champion Poo Vasanthan is set to face formidable adversaries in his bid to retain his title, including the five-time KLSCM champion in the category, Muhaizar Mohamad, national marathon record-holder Leo Tan Huong Leong, and national half marathon record-holder Prabudass Krishnan, who will be making his debut in this category at KLSCM.
Notably, the Full Marathon route for this year mirrors that of the previous edition in 2022, featuring a flatter course compared to previous years. This alteration promises quicker finishing times and a more exhilarating competition.
In its 15th edition, KLSCM is embracing sustainability, introducing eco-friendly measures to lead the way in making mass participation events greener. As the largest distance running event in Malaysia, KLSCM is determined to set a positive example.
Key initiatives include reducing the use of paper drinking cups at water stations and encouraging runners to bring their own containers. Collectables like lightweight, collapsible cups and bottles are available for purchase. The event also plans to compost approximately 3.5 tonnes of organic waste from fruit provided to runners.
KLSCM’s choice of apparel partner, UK brand Pressio, reflects a sustainability focus. Pressio’s high-performance sports garments are made from sustainable materials and technologies, including recycled yarns and biodegradable components. Moreover, 90% of their garments are produced in a solar-powered factory.
Other efforts involve eliminating single-use plastics for running bibs and medals, and continuing to provide free public transport to reduce emissions. The event also reintroduces Kids Dash categories, offering young participants a chance to race at the historic Dataran Merdeka.
This year, two new beneficiaries join KLSCM’s Run For A Reason (RFAR) charity initiative—Kechara Soup Kitchen (KSK) and Reef Check Malaysia (RCM), along with returning beneficiaries. RFAR allows runners to raise funds for their chosen charity by encouraging donations from friends and family.
In addition to Standard Chartered Malaysia, Gold Sponsor Boost Juice Malaysia, and official partners Seiko, Brooks, 100 Plus, TudungPeople, Pressio, and Tiger Balm support KLSCM 2023. The event also receives support from venue host DBKL, athletics associations, and various government ministries and agencies.
