Powerlifting para-athlete Bonnie Bunyau Gustin won the first gold for Malaysia in the powerlifting men’s 72kg category.
The 22-year-old Sarawakian also broke the Paralympics record of 227 kg set by Iraqi Rasool Mohsin in Rio 2016. He broke the Paralympics record at 228kg in his third attempt.
In 2021, Bonnie set a new world record of 230 kg in the men’s 72 kg event at the 2021 World Para Powerlifting World Cup in Dubai.
