The 15th edition of the Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon (KLSCM) was launched by Minister of Youth and Sports, Yang Berhormat Hannah Yeoh.

The KLSCM, which is Malaysia’s top distance running event, will be held on September 30 and October 1 at Dataran Merdeka. It has been granted the distinguished Road Race Label by World Athletics, making it the first running event in Malaysia and only the fifth in Southeast Asia to receive this recognition.

Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, the 2020 edition of KLSCM managed to draw over 40,000 participants when it was held towards the end of last year. The event was forced to go virtual in both 2020 and 2021 and saw remarkable participation numbers of over 51,000 and 47,000 participants respectively.

The priority registration for KLSCM 2023, which began on April 18, has already seen close to 7,000 participants. This registration was open to runners who have taken part in seven previous editions, including the virtual runs, and faster runners who were eligible based on their previous recorded timings.

Run For A Reason (RFAR) has been a vital aspect of KLSCM, and through raising more than RM7 million over the last 15 years, it has significantly enhanced the lives of many Malaysians. In 2023, Standard Chartered’s Futuremakers, Hospis Malaysia, Dignity For Children Foundation, Kechara Soup Kitchen, and Reef Check Malaysia will benefit from the charity programme.

Furthermore, this year marks the 15th year of Standard Chartered Malaysia’s sponsorship of the event. Their steadfast support since the inaugural edition in 2009 has been a significant contributing factor to its success, truly embodying the bank’s corporate tagline of “Here For Good.”

In an effort to reduce its carbon footprint and waste, KLSCM will be implementing changes to the event this year. The event will encourage runners to use refillable bottles instead of paper cups for water, compost leftover fruit, and raise awareness about recycling and waste reduction. This marks the beginning of KLSCM’s sustainability journey, and the organisers plan to continue introducing new initiatives to make the event more environmentally friendly in the future.
