Malaysia Ultra-Trail™ by UTMB®, formerly known as the Malaysian Mountain Trail Festival, has joined the UTMB World Series and will host runners from around the globe in Taiping and the stunning jungles of northwest Malaysia.
The 2024 event is scheduled for 15 to 17 November, with registration opening for UTMB Index holders on 4 June, and for all runners on 6 June.
Founded in 2018 by Ewegene Tan, who continues to serve as the Race Director, Malaysia Ultra-Trail by UTMB offers trail runners five race options: a 100K, 50K, 20K (25km), 13km, and a Vertical Kilometre.
Ewegene Tan eagerly anticipates welcoming runners from around the world to Malaysia for an unforgettable event.
“Prior to our first event in 2018, we spent three years scouting the region for the best possible trails, and we can’t wait to welcome the world to Malaysia as part of the UTMB World Series this November,”
“Malaysia Ultra-Trail by UTMB® will take runners into jungle reserves and forest areas with limited access.
“Runners will traverse a wide variety of unique trails, from old railroad beds to plantation paths, four-by-four tracks, and rugged jungles, all based out of the historic town of Taiping, which is rich in history,”
“At our core, we are a community event. Trail running is all about bringing people together, and we look forward to expanding our community as we join the UTMB World Series.”
The event kicks off with the Vertical Kilometre (MYVK) on Friday, 15 November, where runners will climb 1,000m over a 5.6km course, starting at Maxwell Hill and finishing at Angkasa, 1,036m above sea level.
The 100km event (MY100) begins at 3am the next day, featuring 4,940m of elevation gain over 98.4km, starting and ending at Esplanade Taiping, Perak. Runners will have 32 hours to complete the course.
On Saturday, November 16th, the MY50 50km event begins at 10 am with a 17-hour cutoff, followed by the MY25 25km event in the afternoon.
The final event, MY13, a 14.1km race with 320m of elevation, starts on Sunday morning, 17 November.
The Malaysian trail running community ranks 23rd worldwide and fifth in Asia, following China, Japan, Thailand, and Hong Kong.
Since its inception in 2018, the Malaysia Mountain Trail Festival has quickly become a cornerstone event, attracting participants from across Southeast Asia and establishing itself among the country’s top three largest trail running events.
This year, 87 Malaysians have entered the UTMB® lottery, highlighting the local runners’ aspirations and the appeal of the UTMB World Series. The series allows Malaysian runners to experience the UTMB® adventure closer to home and collect Running Stones without long-distance travel.
Malaysia Ultra-Trail by UTMB® owes its success to the support of Tourism Malaysia, Tourism Perak, Ministry of Youth and Sports Malaysia, Perak Forestry Department, Taiping City Council, Member of Parliament Taiping, Mr. Wong Kar Woh, and the District Office of Taiping.
